Past Assessment Wrong |
| |
 |
In 1997, our house had sq footage of 1862. We took off 2 porches and a backroom. Last April the town came out and remeasured our house. It is now 1364 sq ft. We took off 498 sq ft of the house. Since 1997, we have been paying taxes on 1862 sq ft. When I asked the town about this, they said that it doesn't matter because the assessment is higher now then in 1997. This doesn't seem right. What can you tell me? And is there a New York State office that I can contact, I would like to pursue this matter. Thanks Janet |

Your local assessor's office can tell you about a simple small-claims sort of procedure for protesting your assessment. But I think I've heard that you can only protest past problems with property taxes for one year back. I may be wrong. If the amount of money involved warrants it, consult a real estate attorney who can give you better information than I can. |
