Just Call The Irs |
| |
 |
Dear Ms. Lank: I notice there are occasions when you tell someone you are not a tax lawyer and they should consult one. However, some of these questions would no doubt be answered for free by the IRS itself, at 1-800-TAX-1040. I have always found them eager to help you get information that will lead to your paying the lowest tax legally allowable! And of course, if they can't answer a question, a tax lawyer is always good. But a free answer from the horse's mouth is usually a good first step |

Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to write. I quit phoning the IRS some years ago, because I found that if I called twice with the same question, I'd get two different answers. For a while there I started phoning three times and averaging the results. Then I gave up. But evidently things have changed for the better while I wasn't paying attention. As for consulting a tax lawyer, you'll note that I try not to suggest that unless a substantial amount of money is involved. In those cases, it's worth the investment in skilled professional help |
