Ask Heather about: Mortgages, Finance, Taxes or Home Selling?

Mrs. Lank: We own an old farmhouse currently on the market. We have had two open houses and both times, people from the family that owned the house years ago come in and take pictures of MY home. I can not believe that this is something that happens everyday. We have also had someone from the same family make an appointment to see the house when they know darn well they are not interested to buy. What are our rights as the home owners? Selling your house is stressful enough without people like this adding to the stress. How do we stop this from happening?

Just speak up. It's too bad this is irritating you. Surely your real estate agent (or you) can say "no photographs" when people enter the house. On the other hand, of course, you do want to encourage genuine house-hunters who might want pictures to help them remember details about your home. At any rate, it is certainly acceptable to set any limits you want. When people take advantage of you, it’s often just because you let them.
