Asbestos Is Fraying |
| |
 |
Dear Ms. Lank: We are considering selling our 1920s era house. We have hot water heat, and the pipes in the basement that supply the water to the radiators are insulated with what appears to be asbestos. In places, the wrapping around the insulation has frayed, exposing the insulation. What are the legal regulations regarding this condition? Must we abate the condition, or is it possible to sell "as Is" in this respect, assuming that we make full disclosure? |

Disclosure is always a fine idea, but why would you want to live, meanwhile, with a potentially dangerous situation? Often re-wrapping (encapsulating) asbestos isn’t too expensive. Have a qualified expert look into the matter. Otherwise you’re risking your own health, and in the end you could well turn off many buyers and have to settle for less than your house is really worth. |
