Dear Edith: I read that a new law says everybody can get a free credit report and I called credit bureaus but nothing happens. They all want $8 or $15 . Is there a special phone number I should call?
Call 877-322-8228 or use the site www.annualcreditreport.com. From there you’ll be sent to the phone number or web site of the company you want to contact. Be prepared to identify yourself by answering some personal questions based on items in your report. You are entitled to three free reports a year, one each from Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. If you space them properly you can check your credit free every four months. That would be particularly useful for a home buyer because if errors are found (and they often are) it can take time to clear them up. You want to go into a mortgage application with as clear a record as possible.
