Can Widow Assume Mortgage Loan?

If a married couple has a home loan, and only the husbands name is on the deed, and he passes away before they get it refinanced to put her name on it, what can happed to the loan? Can the wife assume the loan? or would she have to get a new loan?

Lenders almost always allow a surviving spouse to assume an existing home mortgage.
