Dear Edith: Advise people to use a professional.
I am not a broker or attorney, but over the last 40 years I have been personally involved in dozens of deals. Years ago one could obtain a loan commitment over the phone or with a handshake. Closing took 15 to 20 minutes.
Now I recently did a simple refinance. It required nearly two hours and the signing of 30 documents. Nobody should do this now without a professional. I know some have, but people also have surgically removed their own appendix. Don't try it !!
