Dear Edith, I have written to you before about titles and such, but now I am writing for your advice on what should happen at the death of a parent (my Mom). I know that I should get the death certificate recorded, however how do I handle the title of the house, and bank accounts? My father is still alive and still going through the grieving process. I ‘m not even sure when to approach him about this. With the title of the house in joint tenancy of my parents should there be a Quit claim deed adding my name to the house? How do you go about adding my name to the bank accounts?
When your father feels better, urge him to consult a lawyer to find out what, if anything, needs to be done. At that time he can discuss with the attorney whatever estate-planning changes would be wise.
