Dear Edith: The short question is: what needs to happen for me to be added to the title of my husband's house? The long question is: my husband owned his home, which I moved into. Now, he'd like to add me to the title so I also have ownership (and responsibility for taxes, etc). He remembers that he and his ex-wife sold the house to just him, and he had to refinance to get his name his name as sole owner. Do we need to re-finance and re-buy the house, just to get my name on the title? (Or do I mean deed?)
Your husband signs a new deed, making the two of you co-owners. That’s all it takes. You might check first with your mortgage company, but there isn’t usually any refinance problem for a title transfer between spouses. That divorce situation nvolved other considerations. A lawyer can help with the simple paperwork and the important recording of the new deed in the county’s public records.
