Dear Edith: I purchased our house in 1960. Since that time we have had six different banks involved in our mortgage. In 1990 when it was paid off we received final papers, except our abstract. I have written to the last bank where our payments went and they know nothing. I am left without an abstract which I will need to sell. What do I do?
You might as well stop worrying. It's often hard to track down an old abstract, that bulky sheaf of papers with information about the ownership of your land over the years. Even if you had the old one, it would still have to be updated when you sold. Someone would have to search the public records for many years back. The cost would be about as much as paying for a brand-new abstract anyhow.
