Dear Ms. Lank: My parents have a two-family house to sell and they are having a problem trying to get the upstairs tenants out. They have been living there about 53 years. My parents sent them a letter to start looking in June, 2004.They are still there. My parents raised their rent (the lawyer said we could since they do not have a lease). Now they have not paid the rent this month and are still not getting out. We lost a sale because of their inconsiderate actions. My parents told the lawyer to start the eviction papers. Is there anything else we can do? They will not even let me show the upstairs apartment to prospective buyers.Fortunately, we do have an interested party who may be willing to wait. How can we speed up the process?
You can just hang in there and let the eviction process take its course.Or, if you're willing to spend something to speed things up, tell the tenants that if they leave next week you'll give them a few hundred dollars to help with the move.Sometimes that works.
