Seller Rejected Offer

I had a contract on a property in which I contered their offer. This was the response "Please inform your Buyer that the Seller has rejected her counter offer of $67,500.
He has accepted an offer from another agent."
My understanding is that another contract cannot be entertained until the first is closed. Is this correct?

I am not an attorney but it doesn't seem to me that the first offer had any claim until and unless it had been accepted in writing.  Until then the seller is free to deal with any and all others.
