  How much personal information does a realtor really need, besides credit report, income?
 
  A broker can often give better service if he or she is informed about the buyers' situation, needs, goals etc.  But you're right in thinking that the buyer's financial ability to buy is the most important thing.  Buyers who prefer not to reveal personal information certainly need not do so.
