Manhattan Apartment |

Hi,
I am about to make a purchase of a small (yet expensive) apartment in Manhattan, and my girlfriend will be living with me and will pay "rent" in order to help with costs. Should I consider having a formal lease drawn up in the case that we break up? If that does happen, would I be able to evict her from the property? If there is no formal document, could she have any sort of claim on a portion of the apartment? I just want to make sure that I am protected in case anything happens.
Thanks,
Greg |

Greg, it's my understanding that in Manhattan, property transfers are handled by lawyers. Your own attorney should have some advice about whether a lease would make it any easier to handle a breakup. (Of course asking for a lease might lead to a breakup...) |
