Buy Now for Retirement

  Hi Edith,

My wife and I are 3-4 years from retirement, and I am currently putting away 18% into my 401k. I was thinking of stopping that investment, and buying a retirement house now, (With the credit and housing market depressed) it seems like a good time buy.

What do you think?

What will you do with the house in the meantime?  Being landlords takes study and effort if you want to avoid ending up with problems.  Especially if you're planning on retirement in a different area, being absentee landlords is particularly difficult and risky.
In general, I think it's best to wait until a year before retirement to buy.  You'll be a lot more sure about what you want then.
