Asbestos Around the Pipes

  Hi Edith
I live in Rochester in a house that was built on the 1880's and have a pumped hot water/radiator heating system. There is asbestos around the main distributation pipes....if I sell... can I sell 'as is' ? or do I have to remove/encapsulate the asbestos ? The cellar is not used for any living activities...Thanks for your help

The general feeling is that if the asbestos insulation is not friable (crumbling) it poses little danger.  A common solution is to encapsulate it, wrapping it so that no fibres can get into the air.  This is best done by a qualified professional.  I should think you'd want it for your own protection, whether or not you're selling the house.
