Lawyer and Realtor

I have a Doctorate of Jurisprudence and I was once told that with a J.D., you could be a realtor. How does that work, if you know?

Real estate licenses are administered differently in each state.  Often, though, there is a provision that no real estate license is required if a lawyer charges for helping with a real estate sale.  In my state -- and I suspect in most -- the attorney must be licensed to practice in that state.  I don't think the degree alone would be enough.
Even so, in many states, if the lawyer sets up a regular brokerage business and intends to take on salespersons, the lawyer must get a real estate license.  He or she might be exempt from taking the required courses or examinations.
As for "Realtor" -- that's not a state license at all.  It's a trademarked term that applies to licensed brokers who choose to join a private trade organization, the National Association of Realtors (as well as local and state associations.)
