Friend is Upset

My fiance and I have recently started looking to buy our first home. A close friends of ours recently got his Realtor license and decided to be our agent with out even asking us if it was ok with us or how we felt about. He's like a big brother to us and we told him any advice or education would be nice and maybe we could help him out too with letting have the commission of our purchase. We never officially agreed to anything. I got a really good referral of a Realtor that's been the business for 20 years by a friend that I trust and told my fiance about it. We decided we were gonna give her a try and and went to look at some homes with her this past saturday. We told our close friend about it and he blew up and told us that we just screwed him over. In a nutshell he did a whole bunch of yelling, I believe my fiance was only able to get a few words. Needless to say there's bad blood between us now and he wants to meet up face to face to discuss how we wronged him. It has brought tension not only between the Realtor and us but also frustration between my fiance and myself. I feel we did nothing wrong and we shouldn't have to feel guilty about it. We never promised him anything and isn't this our business? This is our first home and will be our biggest purchase, do we not have the right to explore all options? This is why I didn't want to mix business and friendship in the first place. What is your advice?

That close friend of yours will soon learn that without a signed contract, nothing is binding in real estate.  If he wanted to be your exclusive agent, he should have asked you to sign a contract to that effect.  He won't last long in real estate unless he learns to take disappointments in stride, and of course getting angry with prospective clients is no way to get ahead either.
Just think how much worse the situation would be if you'd actually found the right house with that other agent and put in an offer through her!
As for what to do about your friendship -- that's more than I can advise you on.  Good luck!
