Agent Getting Started

Edith, hoping you can offer advice. I just became a licenced REA and I want to know what I need to do to become a good agent. Should I be on the floor, take calls etc? Right now I'm pretty much a tag along with another agent. (yes I am already started working for a realtor) How do I get referrals? I just moved to pa so I do not know many people. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

You may have just moved in, but you are already involved (or should be) in your children's school, your church or synagogue, the place where you work.  Get rid of those first 500 business cards as quickly as possible.  Ask your hairdresser or barber to put a small stack next to the mirror.  Discuss your excitement about your new venture with your new neighbors, the postman,  the folks at your workplace (that's assuming you do have another day job).  You don't ever want to hear a new acquaintance say "Oh, if I'd known you were in real estate, sorry, I just referred my cousin to someone else."   Volunteer for all the floor duty you can have -- I don't know your office's policy on who gets calls that come in if they don't ask for a specific agent or property of course.  Hope you do.

Offer to handle open houses for any agent who has more than one scheduled, and discuss ahead of time which leads  you can keep that develop from it.   Ask your broker's guidance on cold calling -- are there any restrictions in your area?  Do you have an official "do not call" list?

Meanwhile, you can learn a great deal by shadowing a good agent.  Sometimes a good way to start is as an assistant to a high-power over-extended star salesperson who needs to delegate some of the scut work.

Good luck to you, rookie!  Let me know how it works out.
