You may have no choice in the matter. A corporation may couple a promotion with a transfer across the country. Or you yourself may decide that it is worth uprooting the family for a career opportunity in another area. If yours is a military family, you must accept the fact that you may often spend only two or three years in one place. It can be a pleasant milestone that suggests your move: an increase in income permitting you to buy a larger home, the marriage of your last child, retirement. Or you may be forced to sell your home because of a dramatic life change: divorce, death in the family, debilitating illness. And for some who buy, move into, fix up, and sell real estate as a part-time or full-time hobby, it can be business as usual. Perhaps you are unable to carry your mortgage and are facing foreclosure. In that case, immediate action is essential, as discussed at the end of this chapter. But when your motivation is the need for more living space, you are faced with a choice: Should you add on to your present home or buy another? |
